“Committee”
One of the things I hear regularly from golf clubs is that they are struggling to get people involved in their committees — particularly younger members. But are we sure the problem is that people don't want to help?

Recently, Taranaki Golf surveyed all 18 clubs across the region to get a better understanding of how clubs are structured and where some of the challenges might be.

One statistic really stood out: 94% of our clubs still operate with a committee structure. On average, those committees have around eight men and three women, with the average age sitting somewhere between 58 and 68 years old.

There is nothing wrong with having experienced people involved in club governance. In fact, their knowledge, commitment and contribution are incredibly valuable.

But perhaps we need to ask ourselves whether the traditional concept of a “committee” is still the best way to attract new people into our clubs.

What does “committee” mean to people?
For many members, being asked to join a committee probably sounds like a significant commitment.
  • Regular meetings.
  • Agendas and minutes.
  • Budgets and finances.
  • Policies and procedures.
  • Making decisions across a whole range of club issues.
And the expectation that you will be there month after month, year after year.

Now imagine asking the same person a different question.
  • “Would you like to help us with a few events during the year?”
  • “Would you be interested in helping with junior golf a couple of times?”
  • “Could you help us behind the bar for a few events?”
  • “Would you like to help organise our club's social activities?”
  • “Could you give us a hand with membership or welcoming new players?”
Suddenly, the commitment feels very different.

It is specific. It is manageable. And importantly, it gives people the opportunity to contribute to something they are actually interested in.

Maybe we need to change the conversation.

This isn't about saying clubs don't need good governance. They absolutely do!

Every club needs people who are prepared to take responsibility, make decisions and help shape the future of the organisation. But perhaps not every person who wants to contribute needs to be part of a traditional committee.

What if clubs started creating different ways for people to get involved?
  • A small events group.
  • A junior golf group.
  • A social group.
  • A membership and welcome group.
  • A course improvement group.
  • A fundraising group.
  • A communications or social media group.
People could contribute their skills, knowledge and time without necessarily taking on the full responsibility of being a committee member.

And perhaps, over time, some of those people may decide they want to take the next step and become more involved in club governance.

What if we stopped asking people to join? Maybe the question shouldn't be:

“Would you like to join our committee?”

Maybe it should be:

“What would you like to help with?”

That is a very different conversation.

Golf clubs are built on volunteers. They always have been.

But the way people volunteer is changing. Younger members, busy families and people working full-time may still want to contribute — they just might not want to commit to another regular meeting every month.

Perhaps we need to make it easier for people to say yes. So maybe it's time to rethink the word “committee.”

Aarun Langton

“40 YEARS”
Image item
Think about that for a moment… “40 years!”

Some of us weren't even playing golf 40 years ago. Some of us weren't even 'born!' 😂

Aarun Langton has decided to step away from the Taranaki Golf Board, bringing to an end an incredible contribution to Taranaki Golf that has spanned four decades.

Over those 40 years, Aarun has worn plenty of hats — player, selector, administrator, Board member and life member — giving his time, knowledge and passion to the game he loves.

Forty years is a long time in anyone's language. It's a lot of golf, a lot of meetings, a lot of decisions, a lot of conversations… and no doubt a few stories that are probably best left untold!

But seriously, 40 years of involvement is an incredible contribution.

On behalf of everyone at Taranaki Golf, thank you, Aarun, for everything you have given to our sport and our region.

Your contribution is woven into the history of Taranaki Golf, and we are incredibly grateful for it.

Enjoy the next chapter, Aarun — and thank you for 40 years! ⛳

Building a Pathway for Players to Thrive
How do we help an emerging golfer who wants to get better? That is one of the questions Taranaki Golf needs to answer well.

We have talented golfers, great clubs, passionate volunteers, coaches, Futures, Golf in Schools, She Loves Golf and a representative programme.

What we need is a clear development pathway that connects these pieces together.

The Fairway Project is Taranaki Golf's player development programme, designed to identify, support and develop promising golfers across our junior, women's and men's pathways.

It is about more than producing better golfers. It is about developing confidence, character, resilience, decision-making and the understanding of what it takes to compete.

The six pillars
  1. IDENTIFY – Find talented, motivated and committed golfers across Taranaki.
  2. DEVELOP – Provide structured support across the technical, physical, mental and personal aspects of the game.
  3. PATHWAY – Give players a clear understanding of where they can go and what they need to do to progress.
  4. CONNECT – Bring players, coaches, clubs and Taranaki Golf together around common goals.
  5. MONITOR – Understand individual needs and provide targeted support to help players progress.
  6. PERFORM – Prepare players to compete confidently at Taranaki, North Island and national levels.

Success won't simply be measured by how many representative players we produce or tournaments we win.

It will be measured by whether a golfer in Taranaki can answer:
  • Where do I go if I want to get better?
  • Who can help me?
  • What do I need to work on?
  • What is my next step?
  • Can I see a future for myself in golf?
If we can answer those questions, we are creating something positive for the future of golf in Taranaki.
Discover. Develop. Perform. Represent. Progress.
That's the Fairway!
…And then we may win some more tournaments!

1. How did you first get involved with golf? My uncle worked at a driving range in Lower Hutt, I used to spend school holidays there with him and have been hooked ever since.

2. How long have you been at Te Ngutu Golf Club and what was the attraction? I've been here coming up 4 months, while searching for a role I was attracted to the culture and community vibe the golf club displayed. Since being here I have been welcomed with open arms, it's a cool place.

3. What's the best thing about your club members? It's so cool how many members get stuck in and volunteer to make the course what it is.

4. Tell me what you want to achieve in golf? I have just applied to start the NZ PGA trainee program in 2027. Short term I want to become a qualified professional. That will put me in a good position to set myself up as one of the top Taranaki coaches. Long term I would love to be in a position to mentor / coach high level amateur golfers.

5. What do people perhaps not realize about you? I'm a big Auckland Warriors fan and despite their results I still support the Maroons.

6. What would you say to someone who is thinking about playing at your club? It's a great place to either learn the game or continue if you're a seasoned veteran. Like I said it's a friendly welcoming club with killer views of the mountain.

• Favourite hole at your club — and why? 12th Hole, one of the harder holes on the course, you can't see the landing zone, and it plays harder than it looks.

• Favourite golf memory?  Going to the Michael Campbell Parade in Wellington after his 2005 US Open Win. Tiger Woods at Paraparaumu beach in 2002 is a close 2nd, I was in the crowd.

• Who would be your dream fourball? Brooke Kopkea, Justin Thomas, Ricky Fowler

• What's your go-to club in the bag? 7 Wood, versatile, height, stopping power.

• 19th hole: beer, coffee or something else? Beer = Summit Ultra.
